Yvette D’Ath named opposition spokeswoman for education

NEWLY elected Queensland Labor MP Yvette D'Ath has been named as the opposition education portfolio spokeswoman.

Ms D'Ath won the Redcliffe by-election handsomely earlier this month which saw a two-party preferred swing of more than 16%.

Her win boosted Labor's ranks in the Queensland Parliament to eight out of 89 seats.

The by-election for the seat, located north of Brisbane, was held to elect a replacement for disgraced former member Scott Driscoll.

Mr Driscoll quit politics last year shortly after the Queensland Parliament's Ethics Committee recommended he be expelled for misleading the House and failing to register his interests and those of his wife.

He was ordered to appear before the Bar of Parliament on the final sitting day last year to answer 49 contempt charges and was subsequently fined $90,000.

His wife, Emma Driscoll, has been charged with 13 fraud-related offences stemming from the same dealings, which nearly saw her husband become the first MP in history to be expelled from the Queensland Parliament.

Mr Driscoll is still the subject of ongoing Queensland Police and Crime and Misconduct Commission investigations.
