TWO youths flirted with danger by running through the Coffs Harbour Jetty railway crossing as a train approached.

Their mad dash was filmed by a resident on a nearby balcony on Saturday.

The vision shows the youths completely ignoring warning signals and running across the rail line.

Footage of the illegal act has been posted online to warn others of the danger.

While the youths are some distance away as the train rolls through the crossing almost 40 seconds later, the man who filmed the incident was concerned as he watched on.

"The two teenagers crossed the track when the barriers were down."

"The train was heading southbound towards Coffs Harbour Station and was approximately 500 metres down the line.

News of the incident comes following a NSW Police crackdown on safety in and around railway crossings.

The main focus is vehicles queuing across railway lines.

Various operations have been held across the state already this year, involving NSW Police and Transport NSW and Roads and Maritime Services.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said last year police issued 264 infringements for level crossing offences in NSW.
