Youth and experience the key for rowing crew

ROWING: Australian women's quadruple sculls coach Tom Westgarth hopes a "fantastic mix of experience, youth and excitement” can deliver success to his crew.

Three of the crew - Jessica Hall, Jennifer Cleary and Madeleine Edmunds - will make their Olympic debut, but they will be able to draw upon the experience of Kerry Hore, who is competing at her fourth Games.

The four have been honing their skills together under Westgarth's direction for the past three years.

"We've been really lucky in a way,” Westgarth said.

"Kerry brings a lot of experience to the group and is a real steadying influence for the younger girls.

"But the three first-time Olympians bring a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of talent.”

The Olympic regatta begins on Saturday, day one of the Games.
