ANDREW Thomson is a 22-year-old with a passion for music.

This devotion sees him collect guitars (10 currently), a scattering of notable awards and a compilation of self-composed music.

It has been around four years since the young muso (pictured right) first picked up a guitar and since then he's begun to realise that music is what he wants to do.

"Honestly when you play your own stuff and have heaps of people sing along with you, it's pretty unreal," Andrew said.

"If you can make one person feel what you're feeling, then that's great."

This year has barely started and already the budding singer/songwriter has been recognised for his country and folk music talents.

At this year's Tamworth Country Music Festival, Andrew came second in Touchwood Productions' Discover quest for Australia's best country songwriter.

The song he wrote, Song For You, came easily, as did the prize of $1000.

He was also a male vocal finalist at the Capital Country Music Association's National Talent Quest.

The music festival is all about networking, which Andrew took full advantage of making some big name contacts though he remains tight-lipped about them.

"I've been asked to go down and write some songs," he said.

"It's pretty unreal. It seems like everything from the year is coming together, like it's almost meant to happen."

Andrew sees Keith Urban, who collected a golden guitar at the CMAA Country Music Awards for best male artist, as one of the best.

"If I could be half a good of a guitarist as him I think I would be doing pretty well.

"I'll get there one day. I think I probably need a couple more years, sitting in my room playing the guitar," he said.

Catch Andrew at his next gig on March 2 at The Grand from 8pm.
