Hard battles earn honours in the pool for water polo teams
STRONG performances from Andrew Young, James Foster and Kai Pick highlighted Far North Coast water polo at the Ballina pool on Monday night.
Lennox Head and Lismore Workers met in the first game.
It was 2-all at half-time in a hard-fought affair.
Young is new to water polo, but found something special. He scored his second goal with a powerful, long-range shot to put Lismore in front.
It wasn't enough, though, as Pick took back the lead for Lennox with a couple of rockets in the third.
Lennox edged away to win 7-5.
In the second game at Ballina, Alstonville B met Byron Bay.
Byron were two men down initially and struggled to set a solid defence.
They went in at half-time trailing 4-1 but mounted a comeback with three goals in the third quarter to even the scores.
Foster had other ideas, though, and replied with two quick goals to regain the lead.
Tiring legs in the last gave Alstonville the advantage and they went on to win 8-5.
At the Alstonville pool, a top-of-the-table clash between Mullumbimby and Alstonville A1 produced some great action.
Mullum put up a good fight, but the speed and energy of the Alstonville young guns was too much.
Alstonville confirmed they will be the team to beat this season with a12-6 win.
