NSW Origin and Kangaroos star Dean Young has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

An emotional Young admitted he could only just tell his Dragons teammates of his decision before he broke down in tears.

The tough 28-year-old cited persistent knee problems since 2006 as the reason he will stop playing before his contract expires at the end of 2013.

"I'm a bit sick of crying," the hooker/back-rower said also in a reference to the tears he shed after he helped his side win the 2010 grand final.

"I told my teammates I would retire at the end of the season and I couldn't get much else out after that."

Young has played for NSW and Australia but rated the 2010 grand final as his career highlight after "proving (the media) wrong".

Dragons captain Ben Hornby rated Young "one of our great players - he gave everything to the club".
