Yellow coffin, SpongeBob, brighten sad Luke Batty farewell

A YELLOW coffin adorned by a SpongeBob SquarePants and flowers were used to farewell Luke Batty in front of hundreds of family and friends on Friday.

Mourners filed into the Flinders Christian Community College in Victoria to say their goodbyes to the boy who was killed by his father Greg Anderson after cricket training.

"Yellow is the colour of sunflowers and daffodils," said a note at the front of the funeral booklet.

"The colour of Sponge Bob, the Tour de France winner's jersey, happy faces, post-it notes ... it's the colour of happiness and optimism, of enlightenment and creativity, sunshine and spring."

Luke was a Grade 6 student at the Tyabb school.

Many of his classmates wept as the finality of his passing became too clear.

Dozens of families, many with children wearing school uniform, turned out for the service.

Most of the mourners were wearing a touch of yellow in tribute to Luke.

Luke's mother, Rosie Batty, wore a yellow jacket, flower and scarf.

Head of junior school Greg Partridge said Luke enjoyed being the centre of attention.

"He had a good sense of humour... teachers would find it hard to discipline him when they were all laughing at what he just said," he recalled.
