Local waves, comps made Tyler a world championship contender

SURFING close to home helped Lennox Head's Tyler Wright become a genuine contender on the women's World Championship Tour this year.

Wright, 19, won two WCT events and finished second behind new world champion Carissa Moore.

"I think winning the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast was a turning point for me," Wright said.

"I was surrounded by my family and friends at an event close to home.

"At the start of the year I just wanted to surf and not worry about anything else."

It was Wright's third year on the WCT and her best result.

She finished fourth in her first two years with the title race coming down to the final event in Portugal earlier this month.

Wright also took out the Colgate Plax Girls Rio Pro in Brazil in May.

"It was a good year for me, I had a blast," she said.

"The surfing on the women's tour has been getting better for years; everyone stepped up and pushed the limits.

"I started to not really focus on what others were doing and just think about what I want and what works best for me."

Wright has just left Australia for a holiday in the United States.

She will finish the year fulfilling sponsorship commitments with Rip Curl down the east coast of Australia.

"I might have some time off and go to some summer music festivals," Wright said.

"I've never done that before and I'm pretty excited."

Her older brother Owen Wright hopes to return for the opening event of the 2014 men's WCTseason in March.

He has missed the last few events this year with a back injury.
