Women's four gold takes Aussies to second in medals tally

AUSTRALIA has finished second on the medal standings at World Rowing Cup III with a second crew of women claiming gold in less than 24 hours.

In the wake of Amy James, Alice Arch, Georgia Miansarow and Georgia Nesbitt's gold in the lightweight quadruple scull, the Australian women's four also claimed victory at the regatta in Lucerne.

The eventual haul of two golds, two silvers and one bronze saw Australia finish second on the medal table.

Molly Goodman, Sarah Hawe, Katrina Werry and Lucy Stephan led their fours final from the halfway point to beat Russia and Canada and pick up their second World Cup gold this season.

"We didn't have a great start but we wound it up and managed to push through,” Hawe said

"We concentrated on the last 750 metres. If we're selected for the world rowing championships in Sarasota we will work on the first 500m to improve our start.”

Later Australia's men's eight claimed silver behind Germany while the women's quad scull of Leah Saunders, Genevieve Horton, Rowena Meredith and Caitlin Cronin won bronze.
