Wollongbar junior becomes Australian rugby union legend

WOLLONGBAR product Bill Johnston is preparing to represent the Australian Legends against England Legends in a 2003 Rugby Union World Cup final rematch.

The Australian Legends include the likes of Al Baxter and Stirling Mortlock who played in the 2003 World Cup final.

England has pulled together the bulk of the World Cup winning team with the exception of captain Martin Johnson and five-eighth Jonny Wilkinson.

The game will be played at Twickenham Stoop in England on October 31.

Johnston, 27, has represented the Australian Barbarians in the past and plays for Colleagues in Sydney's suburban rugby competition.

"Its tradition with this team that they pick an uncapped player and I was lucky enough to get the call-up," Johnston said.

"I remember being in Year 11 at Alstonville High and watching the 2003 World Cup final at my house in Rous.

"To be able to play against that same team a decade later is an incredible feeling."

The Australian team also includes Brad Clyde and Ryan Cross who are better known from their days playing in the National Rugby League.

Johnston is looking forward to playing alongside Mortlock who was a key figure for the Wallabies in the 2003 World Cup.

"It's a 10-day tour and it will be great to be in the company of so many respected players," Johnston said.

"England will be pretty hard to beat but I look forward to the experience."

It doesn't end there for Johnston, he will also be part of the Australian team at the World Rugby Classic in Bermuda next month.

The team is made up of former Australian rugby union and rugby league players.

Roosters legend Brad Fittler and recently retired Newcastle hooker Danny Buderus are in the side.
