Wilson gets off to a flier in France
A VINTAGE Julian Wilson performance to open his Quiksilver Pro campaign highlighted a dramatic 24 hours for the two Sunshine Coast surfers in action at France's World Championship Tour event.
Needing a strong result, Buderim's Dimity Stoyle was knocked out in round four of the Roxy Women's Pro by world championship hopeful Tyler Wright, of New South Wales.
Stoyle, the tour's leading rookie, was ranked ninth before the Roxy Pro.
She must impress in the remaining two stops to finish in the top 10 and automatically qualify for next year's tour.
Overnight on Friday, Coolum's Wilson reminded every-one why he was touted as a potential world champion at the start of the year, getting the better of John John Florence and Brazil's Jadson Andre.
Challenged by in-form Hawaiian Florence, Wilson responded to produce the best heat total of round one and move directly into round three.
His campaign was expected to continue last night.
