BROTHERS Shannon and Simon Vos are just as comfortable picking out cushions as they are swinging a hammer.
The Coffs Harbour-raised siblings are one of five new teams competing in the upcoming Glasshouse season of The Block.
Shannon, 34, is a painter by trade and is studying interior design while Simon, 27, is a plumber and site foreman.
"We were talking about this (show) a couple of years ago and we decided we shouldn't do it with anyone else apart from each other," Simon told APN.
"You can do it with your mates, but it can hurt your relationship. We're always going to be brothers, so if you have a fight you just get over it."
The brothers, who were born in Tasmania, have a shared love of the ocean and surfing thanks to their childhood growing up in Coffs Harbour.
"We moved up when I was two years old and Shannon must have been nine," Simon, who now lives in Sydney, said.
"It's our stomping ground. We learned how to surf there; we learned how to spear (fish), everything to do with the coastal life.
"We also grew up dirt bike riding, four-wheel-driving. I'd say we had the best upbringing in relation to so much we could do at a young age. I'll move back there; I flippin' love Coffs."
Despite their seven-year age difference and Shannon spending much of his adult life overseas, Simon says they were already close before going on the show.
"I'd always be the brother who wanted to go hang out with his older brother," he said.
"It really defined our relationship. He always pushed me into way bigger surf or dong stupid stuff.
"I grew up in his footsteps. I wanted to be like my brother and go travelling and as soon as I came of age that's what I started doing."
The brothers both also have quite a few tattoos including matching triangles on the back of their calves, a memento from a trip to Thailand with their sisters.
"There's not much meaning to it, but the story I try to tell everyone is the triangle is one of the strongest shapes," Simon said. "It represents the strong bond between brothers."
They'll need a strong bond to get through the long hours required to finish one room each week in the Glasshouse, the largest property renovated on the show to date.
- Simon has 15 tattoos, including seven not-often seen ones on his bum
- He has his own tattoo gun and did all the tattoos on his legs and feet himself
- Says the most painful tattoo he has is his dad's name across his toes
