THE public saved her last week and now they have voted Anja Nissen the 2014 winner of The Voice Australia.

The 18-year-old singer from Sydney was the fifth wildcard finalist kept in the running during last week's semi-final when fans voted to save her using the show's HomeCoach app.

She beat runner-up Jackson Thomas, coached by Ricky Martin, and the man the bookies had tipped to win the show, Johnny Rollins coached by Kylie Minogue.

"Thank you Australia," Nissen said.

"This is surreal feeling for me now.

"I started singing when I was six and always dreamt about my career kicking off, but I never thought it would happen this early, and The Voice has given me an outlet to do that."

With powerhouse vocals that belie her age, Nissen has belted out difficult songs by divas including Mariah Carey, Beyonce and Whitney Houston since getting all four coaches to turn during her blind audition.

It was a night full of firsts for the reality singing show, with Thomas being the first artist saved in the battle rounds to make it to a grand final and ZK being the first duo to make it to a grand final.

Nissen will headline the show's live tour, which starts in Perth on Sunday, and her first single My Girls will be released on Friday.

Her coach offered Nissen a deal with his record label, Music Group, although it is unclear how or if that affects her recording contract with Universal Music, part of the show's grand prize.

The victory follows the American rapper and producer winning this year's series of The Voice UK.

"I told Anja she's awesome," he said.

"I signed Cody (Wise) to my label. I would like to sign Anja to my label." performed his new song It's My Birthday, featuring Wise, earlier in the show.

He also revealed how much he has enjoyed working Down Under.

"I could live in Australia," said.

All four Voice coaches opened the show with a performance of The Real Thing with the Top 16 singers.

Rock singer Frank Lakoudis, who rounded out the Top 5 finalists with's duo ZK, spoke of working with coach Joel Madden, who has yet to win on the show despite being the only remaining original coach.

"I got to live all my rock 'n' roll fantasies," Lakoudis said.

The Voice On Tour plays the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on August 3.
