Missing Jayde Kendall investigation focuses on red car

UPDATE 4.45PM: Forensic investigators are pulling apart the red car Gatton teenager Jayde Kendall was seen getting into more than a week ago before she disappeared.

The 2003 red Toyota Corolla hatchback with faded paint, missing passenger-side hubcap and dull headlights has become the focus of missing persons investigation.

Investigators tracked the vehicle via CCTV through the Gatton CBD between 3pm and 6pm the day Jade went missing - August 14.

Darling Downs District Detective Inspector Dave Isherwood said the camera footage backed up a version of events the 18-year-old male driver gave to police when they located him earlier this week.

But he called on the public to assist officers with their investigation, particularly if they spotted the red car around Gatton the day Jayde disappeared.

"It is very distinctive in the fact it is very faded on the roof, is missing a hubcap (and the) headlights are faded," Det. Insp. Isherwood said.

He said police were continuing to validate the "version of events" the car driver gave to police.

"We're not saying it's false (but) we can't confirm the version of events given by the driver is correct nor confirm it is incorrect," he said.

"We have done doorknocks in the CBD and other areas highlighted where he has been with the missing person.

"CCTV puts that in the Gatton CBD itself."

Det. Insp. Isherwood said Jayde's bank accounts still had not been touched, nor had her phone been used or had she contacted her family or friends.

He said Jayde knew the driver through school and her job at McDonald's at Gatton, adding that Jayde's family did not know the man.

Police have grave concerns for her welfare and safety due to the length of time that has elapsed since anyone has seen her.

While he could not rule out the fact she was no longer in the Lockyer Valley area, Det. Insp. Isherwood said there was no reason to think she wasn't still around Gatton.

"We have no reason to believe she has left Gatton but we have no evidence from the family to suggest she has done anything to go and meet someone," he said.

"The family do not believe that she has left the Gatton area."

He said until further information came to light, police would continue investigating the case as a missing person.

"I think the best way to describe it (is) until we get some evidence that she has met with foul play, it probably will remain a suspicious missing person," he said.

"There is no evidence to suggest she has met with harm."

He said an item belonging to Jayde found beside the Warrego Hwy at Walloon, which triggered a large-scale search in the area outside Ipswich, had possibly been placed there by another person.

"The reality is the fact that article was found at Walloon (and) someone placed it there and it probably was not the missing person," he said.

Det. Insp. Isherwood urged anyone that spotted the red car around Gatton on Friday, August 14, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

FRIDAY 11AM: Police investigating the disappearance of Gatton teenager Jayde Kendall have released photos of the red car she was seen entering last Friday.

Investigators are asking for people who saw a red 2003 model Toyota Corolla hatchback to contact Crime Stoppers.

The vehicle of interest may have been driven by an 18-year-old male described as being Caucasian, about 180cm tall with dark hair.

The red car is believed to have travelled around the Gatton area last Friday between 3pm and 6pm.

Jayde Kendall, 16, was last seen about 3.15pm last Friday in Highview Ave.Anyone who saw the car or has information which may help police locate the missing teenager is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

FRIDAY 6AM: Jayde Kendall hasn't touched her bank accounts, used a mobile phone, posted on social media or called her distraught widower father for seven days.

Jayde, 16, has seemingly disappeared with barely a trace. She was last seen about 3.15pm Friday. A random object was found beside the western edge of the Warrego Hwy near Ipswich.

Police Land Search and Rescue crews and SES personnel spent two days combing an extensive area but wound back the search after no clues to her whereabouts were found.

There are no leads as to where the studious young girl with a bright future might be.

"She is a child that is very interested in her future with respect to her education," Darling Downs District Detective Inspector Dave Isherwood said.

"She enjoyed her engagement with staff and customers at her job.

"There was no boyfriend that we know of in recent times."

He said authorities held grave concerns for Jayde, and implored anyone with information to contact police.

"We've undertaken a very thorough search but we've found nothing further," he said.

Det. Insp. Isherwood would not reveal what the item found near Walloon was, more than 40km from where Jayde was last seen in Gatton on Friday, but said it belonged to the teenager.

It was found beside a guardrail on the western side of the Warrego Hwy, which he said indicated the car was headed back toward Toowoomba.

"There's no reason as to why it should be there," he said.

"Because it belonged to her the decision was made to do an extensive search rather than a cursory search.

"But there was nothing located that was related to her."

The search for Jayde has focused on the area around Walloon where other items of clothing were found.

Police would not confirm if it was the teenager's.

The search has also centred around the driver of the red car Jayde was seen entering of her own free will on Friday.

The teenage male driver is assisting with police inquiries after officers tracked him down after receiving information from the public via Crime Stoppers.

"She knew him through school. At the moment he is a person of interest," Det. Insp. Isherwood said.

"She (Jayde) remains a missing person because of the fact there is no evidence to suggest otherwise.

"The longer it goes on, the longer she is missing, the more concerns we get.

"There are grave concerns for her safety due to the time that has already gone."

Anyone with any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
