Peter Wellington heads push for hendra vaccine inquiry
SUNSHINE Coast MP Peter Wellington has called for a State Government inquiry into adverse reactions from the hendra vaccine.
ABC Rural radio reports the Speaker of the Queensland Parliament and Independent Member for Nicklin said there was concern among horse owners that the vaccine had major side effects including death.
He would write to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk asking her to establish the inquiry.
"There is a lot of evidence I have received from people saying there is a connection between the hendra vaccine and the death or serious illness of their horses," Mr Wellington told ABC Rural.
"Unfortunately, the authorities, as I understand, are pooh-poohing the incidents and say there is no problem with the vaccine.
"I believe all of the people who have contacted me need to have a chance to share their story with the State Government and authorities.
"I believe when you put all of this evidence together, the authorities will have to acknowledge that the similarity of evidence and complications form a direct connection between the hendra vaccine and the illness and death of a horse.
"They cannot ignore it any further."
Mr Wellington said he would ask the Premier to refer the inquiry to the parliamentary Agriculture and Environment Committee to ensure it was thorough.
