Emergency birth for Bonell baby 16

WELL-PRACTISED in the art of giving birth, nothing could prepare parents Jeni and Ray Bonell for the fearful arrival of their sweet 16th.

"There was the absolute fear - am I going to come away with a baby from this?" Mrs Bonell said.

Newborn Katelyn Vera's entry into the world led to some dramatic scenes in the St Vincent Hospital maternity ward as, for the first time, a Bonell birth met with major complications.

"There was a cord prolapse and when they discovered that it was straight into an emergency c-section," Mrs Bonell said.

"It all happened so quickly. We were incredibly lucky as our doctor had his whole surgery crew on hand."

The unstoppable Toowoomba mother said she was used to getting up and getting back into things but had experienced a much slower and harder recovery.

"I feel a little sad I missed those first few hours. Now that I'm up and moving again I'm grabbing onto every moment and enjoying those usual things, like bath time.

She's not the only one fighting for Katelyn's affections - "I don't think she's been put down yet."
