Watts the story after Lynch misses long shot

TOM Lynch had done everything he could throughout the game to give his Gold Coast Suns a chance of victory over Melbourne at the MCG.

But the big power forward wasn't able to quite thread the after-the-siren goal that would have turned the six points into four premiership points.

The Demons eventually held on to win what was primarily a lacklustre thriller, 9.12 (66) to 9.10 (64), with Lynch's tough shot from the 50m line on the tightest of angles falling short.

Lynch finished with 2.2 from seven marks and 20 disposals after kicking the first major of the game.

His miss left the much- maligned Jack Watts to be the hero for the Demons. His third goal had given his side the lead with four minutes remaining after the Suns had threatened to run away.

The hosts had taken an eight-point lead into the final term and stretched the margin to 14 points before the visitors kicked three unanswered goals in 12 minutes to lead by four.

Aaron Vandenberg chipped in with three goals for the Demons, who registered their eighth win of the season, while Dom Tyson (31 disposals) was best-afield in the middle. Watts finished with 10 marks and 18 possessions.

With the Suns' entire first-choice midfield injured, Matt Rosa (23 touches) and Touk Miller (21) battled manfully.

It wasn't so close in Perth, where a visiting Sydney thrashed the host, Fremantle, by 90 points.
