Warning issued after complaints about charity tin bandits

SHOP owners with charity tins on the front counter have been warned to watch out for bandits after a main tried to steal a tin from a Ballina store.

Posting on their Facebook page, officers from the Richmond Local Area Command said the man simply took the charity tin and walked out of the shop with it under his arm.

The shop owner chased after the man and managed to get him to return the tin. However, police said such incidents didn't always end so well.

They said they had received several reports of people stealing charity tins from different parts of the Northern Rivers.

If you do have a charity tin in your store or business please secure it appropriately to prevent any further thefts," police said. "Another tip is to regularly empty the tin so there is no incentive."
