MOVIE REVIEW: War is backdrop to thoughtful, tense story

ALMOST every war story is inherently political, especially when your setting is as recent as Afghanistan in the mid-2000s.

However, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot attempts to do it differently, and lets the high-tension and politically-charged conflict serve as a backdrop to tell this thoughtful story about a dissatisfied copywriter turned war correspondent, Kim Baker.

Tina Fey solidifies her movie star credentials in the lead role, portraying the fish out of water Kim who not only finds a rejuvenated purpose in her new role in Kabul, but soon has to confront the adrenaline fuelled, perhaps reckless danger she constantly puts herself and her colleagues in, searching for the next big story.

It's a familiar narrative, a hero finding themselves in far too deep and struggling to make it out intact, but one executed with enough focus and comedic awareness to make it a worthwhile ride.

One particularly interesting part of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is its almost unapologetic subjectiveness.

It never tries to hide the fact that this is one person's solitary side of the story and really makes no attempt at an objective commentary on the war (ironic as this is the role of war a journalist.)

With the war in Afghanistan being such a fresh and controversial issue, the limited perspectives presented have to restrict the scope and impact that the movie can have, especially considering that it has to deliver on laughs.

It's a fascinating question about where a film's priorities should lie but one that if anything, only adds to the intrigue and enjoyment of this well made, well performed and well intentioned movie.
