POLICE are investigating after a swamp wallaby was shot dead at a Fraser Coast wildlife sanctuary on Sunday afternoon.

Wildlife carers heard the shot ring out on Sunday but it was not until Monday morning when carers made the gruesome find.

The young swamp wallaby, Mackenzie, was set to be the first wallaby used in a breeding program at Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sanctuary curator Ray Revill was devastated and said the shot was immediately fatal.

"The really scary part is that our staff were out there at the time," he said.

"We had tourists out there as well."

Mr Revill said it was not the first time an animal had been shot at the Maryborough sanctuary, but it had been some years since the last incident.

Anyone with any information on the shooting should contact Police Link on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
