Wake up and obey the road rules: minister

POLICE Minister Jack Dempsey has urged Queenslanders to obey all road rules after shocking results from the Queensland Police Service's Operation Spring Break.

Mr Dempsey said the operation, which ran from September 20 to October 11, detected almost 1500 drink drivers and saw police issue more than 1000 infringement notices for not wearing a seatbelt.

"The results we have seen are simply not acceptable.  Queenslanders need to understand that the road rules are in place for a reason," Mr Dempsey said.

"It is incredibly disappointing to see the number of people not obeying the road rules, especially those related to the Fatal Five.

"This year we have seen 224 people tragically lose their lives on Queensland roads.

"Every driver can do their little bit by ensuring that every time they get behind the wheel they stick to the speed limit, do not drive tired, do not drive drunk, wear their seatbelt and ensure their full attention is on the road."

Queensland Police Service Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said Operation Spring Break was an effort to address the number of serious incidents and fatalities on Queensland roads.

"There has been a marked increase in the number of offences detected through this campaign, which is unacceptable and reflects poorly on the attitude of some drivers who are willing to place themselves and members of our community at risk," Acting Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

"There is no relief from the enduring pain felt by loved ones who tragically lose a family member on our roads.

"This is a whole-of-community issue and our police need your support to stop people being killed and injured on our roads."
