VW Golf R 7.5 to hit 100kmh in under five seconds
VOLKSWAGEN's updated Golf R hot hatch will be the fastest Australian production Golf ever.
In updated "7.5” guise, VW promises the new all-wheel drive Golf R will crack the 0-100kmh in just 4.8 seconds.
The current Golf R managed the sprint in five seconds.
The model's 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder will see a power leap from 206kW to 213kW, and the sub-five second sprint time is possible when mated to VW's new seven-speed DSG transmission.
"You need not look too far into the past to find the time when 4.8 seconds was the preserve of a Porsche 911,” Volkswagen Group Australia director Michael Bartsch said.
"It is extraordinary that a relatively affordable car not only attains this performance, but includes refinements and technologies that remain options in some prestige brands.”
The current Golf R is still selling strongly ahead of the model refresh, VW shifting 353 units in this year to March 31, making it VW's best-selling compact performance car.
Standard equipment includes a 9.2-inch screen with navigation system and App-Connect, gesture control technology, Vienna leather, heated seats, dual zone climate control, keyless access, entry and start, metallic paint, 19-inch wheels and LED lights.
Pricing for the 7.5 version of the Golf R and the rest of the Golf range will be announced next month. The current Golf R starts from $52,990 before on-road costs.
