VW ends rally involvement with one-two
MOTORSPORT: Volkswagen has said "auf wiedersehen” to the World Rally Championship in the best possible way, winning the 2016 Rally Australia in Coffs Harbour.
It was a one-two for the German manufacturer with Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen (pictured) holding off world champion teammate Frenchman Sebastien Ogier to win by 19.9 seconds and give him his second win of 2016.
Volkswagen announced earlier this month that it was pulling out of the series.
"I told (co-driver) Anders (Jaeger) in the stage that I'll miss this car,” Mikkelsen said. "Coming in I had nothing to lose. This year I really drove for the championship, but coming here I just drove for the win to see how fast we could be if I just pushed.”
Thierry Neuville capped a roller-coaster 2016 with third place, securing him second place in the drivers' world championship (160 points), behind clear winner Ogier (268).
