Fans farewell country singer who died doing what he loved

SHOCKED country music fans took matters into their own hands to attempt to revive a musician who suffered a fatal heart attack at a Rosewood event on Sunday.

Murgon singer Viv Kehl collapsed while performing on stage at the Country Revival Show at the Royal George Hotel and died after he was taken to Ipswich Hospital.

A member of the 70-strong crowd attempted CPR until staff from the nearby IGA store arrived with a defibrillator purchased through community charity efforts.

Onlookers who said several emergency calls were made before an ambulance attended were critical of the response time with the Rosewood Ambulance Station located two blocks down the same street.

However QAS West Moreton acting chief superintendent Drew Hebbron said the first ambulance was on the scene in seven minutes with two further crews attending the incident. Mr Hebbron praised the community for their quick reaction in helping the man before crews arrived.

He said while the Rosewood Station was manned from 7am to 5pm Sundays, crews were mobile and the station's proximity to the case was not an issue.

Local musicians yesterday paid tribute to Mr Kehl, who had travelled from Murgon with his wife Shirley to perform at country music shows in the area.

Country Revival Show organiser Bill Yarrow said local country music fans were distressed by the incident but it was a comforting thought that Mr Kehl was enjoying being on the road performing.

"It's a sad occasion and our thoughts are with his wife and family but the man died doing the thing he loved doing, playing music," he said.
