THERE is no obvious explanation.

Every year around this time, the community of Conneaut Lake in America's Pennsylvania celebrate all things pumpkin as part of the Fall Pumpkin Fest.

There is a beauty pageant for girls and women aged four to 22, and obviously a major parade featuring "loats, bands, drill teams, beauty queens, fire trucks, clowns, Zem Zems".

What a Zem Zem is, is unclear.

Most importantly though, there is the annual Giant Pumpkin Drop, when a ridiculously big pumpkin is lifted about 30m off the ground, then dropped on a truck.

Never change, America.
