IT'S a fitting end - the biggest pumpkin ever grown in Australasia devoured as a treat by some of the biggest land animals in Australasia.

The record-smashing 743kg pumpkin was grown at Knockrow by nursery owner Dale Oliver and made headlines around the world when it was entered in Kyogle's annual pumpkin festival.

At the time, Victorian giant vegetable expert Phillip McCauley said the pumpkin and a 612kg squash, also grown by Mr Oliver, were among the top 10 specimens ever grown in the world.

After its moment in the spotlight, the pumpkin was passed on to Taronga Zoo, which gave it to its Asian elephant herd "as a special enrichment treat".

"Pak Boon and daughter Tukta (spent) most of the morning crushing and eating their surprise breakfast," the zoo posted on its Facebook page. 

The pumpkin was donated to Taronga Zoo by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW after being displayed at this year's Sydney Royal Easter Show.
