US Open fun for 'awesome' Serena

Serena Williams says she is not too focused on breaking Steffi Graf's grand slam total at next week's US Open.

Williams (pictured) equalled the German's tally of 22 singles wins at majors after taking out the Wimbledon title.

She can go past her with another win in New York and if she does that, only Australian Margaret Court, who has 24 titles in the open era, will be ahead of the American.

But while Williams said she would love to seal another crown, after last year's shock defeat in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadow by Italian Roberta Vinci, she would be just going in to the tournament for a good time.

"One thing I learned about last year is to enjoy the moment,” Williams told USA Today.

"I'm definitely going to enjoy this.”

Williams said despite her successful career, she still took defeat poorly.

"Unfortunately, I definitely do, which I don't think is normal,” she said.

"I definitely feel like when I lose, I don't feel as good about myself.

"But then I have to, like, remind myself that, 'You are Serena Williams!' You know? Like, 'Are you kidding me?'

"And it's those moments that I have to just, like, come off and be like, 'Serena, do you know what you've done? Who you are? What you continue to do, not only in tennis, (but also) off the court? Like, you're awesome.'

"That really just shows the human side of me. I'm not a robot.”

The US Open begins on Tuesday morning (AEST).
