Upsets and drama at the Noosa Triathlon

Ashleigh Gentle has won her third Noosa Triathlon in a drama-filled day as fellow favourite Emma Moffatt was penalised three minutes for drafting.

In the men's, it was relative unknown Joe Maloy who upset the favourites to become the first American to win the Noosa Triathlon and he did it comfortably in a time of 1hr 47min 4sec, 49 seconds ahead of second placed Ryan Fisher (1:47:53) and third placed Jacob Birthwhistle (1:48:35).

But it was crowd favourite Gentle's day to shine as she punished the field in her bike leg to win in a time of 1hr 59min 18sec ahead of Charlotte McShane (2:01:32) and Emma Pallant (2:02:32).

Gentle said it was an honour to a three-time champion, but it wasn't as easy as she made it look.

"Relief is a good word to describe it," she said.

"I was definitely happy to see that finishing banner, and to know I had the win, coming down felt awesome, and definitely a lot of relief.

"This morning I was so unsure - I didn't know how I'd go on the run, (because) I had a bit of sickness last week, so I just tried to focus on composing myself."

Moffat would have been in contention for a podium placing had she not been penalised. She finished in fourth in a time of 2hr 3min 32sec.
