Upper House vital if Baird is to privatise power grid

A STRONG showing in the Upper House will be vital if Premier Mike Baird is to come good on his promise to privatise the state's electricity grid.

Early counts have the Coalition securing nine or 10 seats in the Legislative Council.

If the party secures 10 spots, it will likely be enough to push through the legislation without the support of Christian Democrats leader Fred Nile.

The Upper House consists of 42 MPs on eight-year terms. Only 21 seats come up for grabs at each State election.

So there may be a snag for the Coalition if early polling proves wrong and the Liberals and Nationals take only nine seats.

Rev. Nile has flagged his opposition to any plan to sell the assets to overseas bidders. He also said he would vote against the sale unless jobs and lower electricity prices could be guaranteed.

"Poles and wires are Australian assets; they belong to the people of NSW, which is why ASIO should assess this proposed leasing to the Chinese Government" Rev. Nile said.

"It is the duty of the NSW State Government not to take the easy way out and sell it to the giant players, but to look to and exhaust all avenues here in Australia, even if it means multiple owners."
