Unknown women take centre stage in US Open

YOU could excuse fans at Flushing Meadows for not knowing much about tonight's US Open women's quarter-final opponents - Switzerland's Belinda Bencic and China's Shuai Peng.

The 17-year-old Bencic (pictured), who beat former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic 7-5 6-3 yesterday on her way to the quarters, is the youngest player to reach the last eight at the US Open since another Swiss Miss - Martina Hingis - did it as a 16-year-old in 1997.

Peng, who has dispatched three seeded players - Agnieszka Radwanska (4), Roberta Vinci (28) and Lucie Safarova (14) - in her run, is also making her debut in a grand slam quarter-final.

The winner will take on the victor of tonight's other quarter-final between Caroline Wozniacki and Sara Errani. In men's fourth-round action tonight, No.2 seed Roger Federer will play Spain's Roberto Bautista-Agut and No.6 seed Tomas Berdych will meet unheralded Austrian Dominic Thiem.
