Two local players selected for ACT U20

TWO Ballina rugby union players have been selected to play for the ACT under-20s at the Southern States tournament in Adelaide next month.

Five-eighth Grant Knight and fullback Sam Giltrap have made the side after playing first grade for the Ballina Seahorses in Far North Coast Rugby Union last year.

Knight, 19, made the move to Canberra mid-year, with Giltrap joining him at the Tuggeranong Vikings in the off-season.

Giltrap and Knight both played first grade at Ballina as 17-year-olds in 2012, with Knight playing rugby only since 2011.

A good performance next week could see the pair picked in a combined states side to play against NSW, Queensland and Tonga next month.

An Australian side will be picked from there for the IRB under-20s World Cup in New Zealand.

"It's good just to be a part of it, and I really want to make the Australian team," Knight said.

"I'll just take it one step at a time, and hopefully I perform."

Giltrap and Knight have both taken part in a gruelling pre-season with the Brumbies Academy squad.

The selection news was well received by Knight, who was contemplating whether he would return to Canberra this year.

"I chose to go back and it's paid off," he said.

"We've had a pretty full-on program (in the off-season), but having Sam here helps.

"I've been concentrating on my communication and leading the boys around the park."

The ACT side has a trial game against a Canberra first-grade team tonight before the tournament in Adelaide next Friday.
