Tyler defends title

LENNOX Head’s Tyler Wright and Stephanie Single have just returned from the Arnette Australian Junior Surfing Titles held at Coolum Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Wright added to her already incredible junior surfing record by winning the Under-18 Girls Australian title.

Tyler has now won the title two years in a row and is also the current world Under-18 champion.

Wright will join Team Australia for the World Under-18 Championships and the chance to defend her title in New Zealand in January.

Single represented NSW for her first time at the event and finished 5th in the Under-16 Girls division.

It was a great way to wrap up a consistently good year for Steph.

Locals qualify

Four Ballina Shire surfers did the trek around the globe throughout 2009, chasing points on the ASP World Qualifying Series to great success.

Lennox Head’s Adam Melling and Owen Wright have now officially qualified for the ASP Dream Tour and will start next year rated within the top 45 surfers in the world.

Adam and Owen will line up at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast in March for the first event of 2010.

Their performances this year have made them real threats to the established stars of international surfing.

Wright has beaten Kelly Slater twice this year as a wildcard, so hopefully he will be back to full fitness after his recent injuries.

It will be very exciting for many of the local surfing community, along with all the members of Lennox-Ballina Boardriders, to cheer for two of their own on the World Tour.

The position they all finished on the WQS ladder and the final ratings points are: 4th Adam Melling 14,638, 5th Owen Wright 14,338, 66th James Wood 8251, 120th Stuart Kennedy 5826.

Mal club

The Ballina Malibu Club held their last competition round for 2009 at Flat Rock last Sunday.

On a beautiful summer’s day with challenging wave conditions, 18 surfers competed for the last points of the 2009 competition season.

Skilled surfing by the competition leaders impressed the judges despite the ordinary waves.

Afterwards the club held their annual presentation at the Ballina Bowling and Recreation Club – 2009 was a year full of fun waves and socialising, with only one competition round missed due to bad conditions.

Full year results: Club Champion: Frank McWilliams, Runner-Up: Grant Edwards; 2nds: 1 Mel Mott, 2 Marg Bryant; 3rds: 1 Bruce Wilson, 2 Brian Delaney; 4ths: 1 Chris Bull, 2 Roger Coulthurst; Most Improved: Bruce Wilson; Club Person of Year: Marg Bryant.
