Two hit as car crashes through footpath Ballina bench seat

AN elderly couple has been taken to hospital after a car mounted the curb and hit them on River St at Ballina this morning.

Witnesses said the couple were going to have a coffee when the Commodore Station Wagon ran up the gutter outside I Love Lollies, ripped a seat on the footpath from its mountings, and collided with the couple at about 11.10am.

It is understood the elderly man was hit by the vehicle and then pushed against the woman who then hit a shopfront window.

Ambulance NSW Lismore Zone Inspector Glenn Eddy said the man and the woman, who were both 85-years-old, were taken to Ballina Hospital in a stable condition.

The driver, who is well known in the Ballina community, also was visibly shocked by the incident.
