Truckies' amazing crash escapes
TWO truckies should buy lottery tickets after miraculously cheating death in two separate crashes on the Pacific Highway north of Coffs Harbour on Tuesday night.
The first accident, at Dirty Creek Range north of Corindi, left rescuers scratching their heads when the lucky driver walked away relatively unscathed from his obliterated cabin.
The Coffs Harbour 47-year-old was driving his Kenworth prime mover and B-double south and was negotiating a sweeping left-hand bend downhill when he lost control at 6.40pm.
The trailer jackknifed, spun around to face north and the vehicle then slammed into an embankment.
The force of this impact tore the cabin from the prime mover’s engine and chassis.
The driver was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus, where his condition was stable yesterday.
The highway was blocked for four hours and commuters were forced to use alternating lanes at the height of the salvage operation.
Police inquiries into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
Investigators say fatigue may have contributed to a B-double smash on the Pacific Highway at Woolgoolga later that night.
Police said a Queensland man, 37, was driving south in his B-double – laden with aluminium pipes – at 11.45pm when he lost control near Newmans Road.
The heavy vehicle slammed into a guard rail on the approach to a bridge and jackknifed, blocking the highway’s southbound lanes.
Diesel spewed onto the road and hazardous materials crews from Coffs Harbour were called to clean up the spill and make the area safe.
The driver, who was not injured, returned a negative breath test at the scene.
The highway was blocked so salvage crews could remove the wreck.
Elsewhere, a Queensland motorcyclist was taken to hospital when she crashed her machine at Coramba on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the 21-year-old was riding on Coramba Road about 3.40pm when she lost control and slammed into a barbed wire fence. She was transported to hospital for treatment before police arrived.
Elsewhere, the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was tasked to a motorbike accident at Megan, near Dorrigo, also late on Tuesday.
