Mum in line for breast surgery

AMY Mudge is one step closer to her goal of having breast reduction surgery provided free of charge.

The Tweed Heads South mother said she has finally been placed on a waiting list for the surgery after a long campaign which included a Facebook protest group and a story by the Tweed Daily News.

“It is unfair for women who suffer from large breasts. After I started the group I was put back onto the waiting list and now I only have a few months left until I actually have the operation,” Ms Mudge said.

“There are a lot of women out there who desperately need the operation for medical reasons and are unable to have it.

“I didn't start this just for my own benefit but for others who need it also.”

Ms Mudge said she suffers from many health difficulties as a result of her breasts.

“I have a disease in my sternum which makes me feel like I am having a heart attack, it's damaging my neck and makes breathing difficult,” Ms Mudge said.

“I have lost 27 kilos and my breasts have stayed the same. This is not a weight issue.”

“The operation is the only way this can be fixed. It is the only way I will be able to breathe again.”

Ms Mudge said other women who suffered similar health difficulties should seek treatment.

“I definitely encourage other women to protest about this.”

A Northern New South Wales Local Health Network spokeswoman said breast reduction is not listed as a procedure performed in the public hospital system, unless surgery is required to address a related severe disability.

“Each case is considered according to the clinical need,” the spokeswoman said.

“The patient would need to make an appointment with the general surgeon and if the patient met the criteria, arrangements for the necessary procedure would be made.”
