Police monitoring bikie activity on the Tweed

TWEED-Byron police will keep a close eye on the border amid an escalating outlaw motorcycle gang war brewing on the Gold Coast.

Superintendent Stuart Wilkins said Tweed police would remain vigilant on the bikies activities.

"We already keep a close eye on them," he said.

"We look at these people and in general terms, they are criminals."

On Friday night a large number of Bandidos club members stormed into a Broadbeach restaurant hunting two Finks associates.

Scores of Queensland police officers were sent the location to assist.

Queensland police said four officers were hurt and 18 Bandidos were charged.

On Sunday, two Finks bikie associates were also charged and faced Southport Magistrates Court charged with affray today.

Supt Wilkins said all officers serving in Tweed were sworn in as special constables and could be called in to assist if Queensland police required it.

"We were aware of the situation on Friday but were quite busy responding to our own calls," he said.

"We didn't respond to Broadbeach's call but we have had many cross-border operation and will continue to do so."

He said Tweed wouldn't be going across the border anytime soon.

"We will be keeping our monitoring on this side," he said.

"We haven't had a great deal of problems; we have not had any significant violence recently.

"It's a different scenario in Queensland though with the nightclub precinct."

At the weekend the Newman government promised $20 million to combat the growing outlaw motorcycle gang problem.
