Happy birthday horses of the world!

TROOPER will be horsing around more than usual today. It's his birthday. In fact, it's all horses' birthdays.

About 4500 equines on the Sunshine Coast will be sharing the event with all horses in the southern hemisphere.

The date was chosen because it is the beginning of the foaling season.

Trooper, a brumby colt, was just five days old when he was found in the Beerburrum forestry in March, severely dehydrated and on the verge of collapse.

But Animal Angels Rescue Queensland came to his aid and he has been in the care of Glasshouse Mountains woman Colette Quinn ever since.

Trooper initially required hourly bottle feeds and as of Wednesday had been weaned off his milk completely.

Animal Angels Rescue Queensland horse coordinator Kirstie Wyhoon said Trooper was settling into his new life pretty well.

WHAT'S NEWS TODAY

"He goes for daily walks with the dogs and his foster carer to get used to his surroundings, other dogs barking and other people," Ms Wyhoon said.

Trooper also has the help of Romeo, another surrendered horse in Ms Quinn's care.

"He's Uncle Romeo to Trooper and is teaching Trooper how to be a horse, how to eat grass, roll in the dirt and wreck rugs," Ms

Wyhoon said. "He's very cheeky, that is the best word to describe him. He's a bit naughty at times."

Once Trooper is old enough he will be gelded and put up for adoption when he's about 12 months old.

Ms Wyhoon, the owner of 13 horses, said Animal Angels Rescue Queensland was in desperate need of more horse foster carers.
