Clothing gamble pays off big for Aussie triathlete

A GAMBLE to put on several extra layers of clothing at the first transition paid off for Gold Coaster Melissa Hauschildt when she stormed home to win the 2013 ITU long distance world championship in France yesterday.

The freezing conditions forced officials to drop the swim leg, instead opting for a 9.5km run, an 87km bike ride and a 20km run.

Hauschildt, a 2006 Commonwealth Games steeplechase silver medallist, beat Denmark's Camilla Pederson by one minute 36 seconds.
