Winx puts final touches on preparation for comeback

CHAMPION mare Winx completed her preparation for Saturday's Group 2 Warwick Stakes with a strong workout at Rosehill Gardens on Thursday morning.

Winx, working solo under Hugh Bowman, wasn't out to make time but looked in great condition as she cruised over 1000m.

Trainer Chris Waller said Winx had returned "stronger and bigger" this season.

"She is about 7kg-8kg heavier and that is mainly muscle," Waller said.

"We are happy with her, she has done the work required for Saturday and we are looking forward to the race."

Winx is chasing her 18th consecutive win, in the Group 2 $250,000 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. She has only seven rivals and is into virtually unbackable odds at $1.06 with TAB Fixed Odds.

One punter has already placed a $61,000 wager at $1.08 on the mighty mare and if she wins as expected, the collect will be $5000.

A large media contingent was trackside early on Thursday morning to watch Winx go through her paces as momentum builds for her comeback on Saturday. The Australian Turf Club is expecting a crowd of up to 15,000 to watch the world's best race mare attempt to continue her long winning streak.
