'Spiderman' risks life climbing building between balconies

AN INTOXICATED 25-year-old American tourist allegedly taunted police, telling them "catch me if you can" as he climbed between balconies of the Airlie Beach Hotel.

In a scene reminiscent of a Spiderman movie, the man allegedly teased police for nearly an hour as he moved around the outside of the building on Airlie Esplanade.

But unlike Spiderman, the man eventually slipped and fell to the street nearly eight metres below.

Whitsunday police Acting Senior Sergeant Simon Walter said the building's cleaners called police to the hotel about 5.20 Friday morning after witnessing the man's behaviour.

"(Police) have chased him around the building, going from spot to spot," Act Snr Sgt Walter said.

"He's very lucky at this stage ... it's complete stupidity that could have been a tragedy."

The man was transported to Proserpine Hospital in a stable condition, suffering from a concussion, lacerations, and suspected internal bleeding.

He has been charged with participating in an unregulated high risk activity and will appear in Proserpine Magistrates Court later this month.

Mackay Base Hospital injury prevention specialist and emergency department physician Dr Dale Hanson said alcohol was a factor in at least 30% of ED presentations across Australia.

He said data showed regional centres were generally worse per capita compared to major cities, and Mackay was no exception.

"We see a lot of tragedy at two levels," he said.

"We see people come through our emergency department severely injured or assaulted and they weren't the one drinking."

"So we certainly see people harmed by other people's bad choices."
