Aussie Richie Porte could still win Tour de France

TEAM Sky's main support rider Geraint Thomas says the team's new No.1 man, Australia's Richie Porte, can catch Tour de France leader Vincenzo Nibali and win this year's race.

The Englishman said Porte had really stepped up after defending champion Chris Froome withdraw on stage five due to injuries he sustained in a series of crashes.

"He's suddenly got even more aggressive if that's possible for him, and he's just like 'Come on, let's do it'," Thomas said.

"It's not like he's saying he's going to kill someone's kids or something, it's just like that real gutsy Tassie in him. He really fights... which is all you want. If you're riding yourself into the ground, you want to know the guy behind you will do the same."

Nibali (Astana) led Porte by two minutes 23 seconds before stage 11 last night, with Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) a further 24 secs back in third place.
