Top cop joins troops to spread safety message

QUEENSLAND'S top cop stepped out from behind his desk yesterday to man a speed gun as part of Road Safety Week.

Commissioner Ian Stewart appeared at Alexandra Headland as part of the force's push to curb the road toll.

He made the trip up from Brisbane on a police cruiser and stopped along the way to enforce the traffic laws.

"I've always had a passion for traffic," he said.

"The fact that I was a police motorcyclist many years ago, getting out there and showing the staff and the troops support is very important."

Mr Stewart said he dreamed of the day police would not have to hand out any tickets and the state's road toll was at zero.

Until then he said police would continue to ram home their message about the fatal five - distraction and inattention, drink and drug driving, fatigue, not wearing a seatbelt, and speeding.

Road Safety Week has been rolled out across the Queensland central policing region - which includes the Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay and Mackay. Last year in the central region there were 95 road fatalities, down on the five-year average of 105.

Mr Stewart said while the road toll was falling and good ground had been made, it was not yet satisfactory.

"It has decreased quite significantly across the state and we want that to continue," he said.

"Even one fatality on our roads is a tragedy. We certainly want to do our part to keep our roads safe."
