TOOWOOMBA personal trainer Jody McLeod believes she has found one way to overcome the nation's childhood obesity problems.

The fully qualified teacher and fitness expert has established a business called Jumping Jaks aimed at making local kids healthier and happier through physical activities.

She hopes by making exercise fun more children will grow up to be healthy adults.

"Statistics have shown that 83 per cent of overweight or obese children will become overweight or obese adults," she said.

"With children, you have to make exercising a game and it has to be fun."

This week the Federal Government's National Health and Medical Research Council released its draft obesity guidelines.

Some of the suggestions in the draft include using the term "weight maintenance" instead of "weight loss" when talking to children.

The draft also includes limiting children age between two and five to one hour of television, dvds or electronic games.


Recommended hours of physical activity

  •  Babies: supervised floor-based play from birth
  •  Under fives: At least three hours a day
  •  Five to 12 years: An hour of moderate/vigorous activity
  •  12 to 18 years: At least an hour

Recommended TV or electronic game time

  •  Under two: none
  •  Two to five: One hour
  •  Five to 12 years: No more than two hours
  •  12 to 18 years: No more than two hours for entertainment
