Toowoomba named sexiest city in Australia

THE city that saw Christian groups and the mayor join in an anti-pornography crusade has claimed the mantle of the sex-toy capital of Australia.

Based on the number of adult toy sales during the year, the steamiest post-code Down Under was Toowoomba, according to a spokesperson for online adult store Femplay.

'We're quite surprised by the result, but we're proud to crown Toowoomba as the nation's sexiest town to live in,' a Femplay spokesperson said.

Sales numbers indicating that the city of Gladstone slipped into second place, followed closely by Beenleigh, Ayr and Ipswich.

According to our insiders at Femplay, "Queensland well and truly rose to the occasion, edging out the rest of the states".

The report comes after City Women Toowoomba called on the city's 50,000 male population to abstain from pornography.

Two hundred and fifty men attended an anti-porn rally in the Civic Square on October 11.

Matthew Gallagher manages the busy Withcott adult store Discount Adult Zone.

He said business was booming, despite the reputation of adult stores being "sleazy backroom establishments".

Mr Gallagher said the apparent irony of the recent anti-pornography drive could be explained.

He said it was a "yin and yang" situation.

"On one side you have a group that campaigns against pornography, yet the city spends the most on sex toys, it says something about the society in Toowoomba," he said.

More than 100 people attended the rally.

"You've still go people who want to be vocal and seen to be appeasing minority groups, but if you ask them off the record they're quite open and say it's fine.

"In Toowoomba you have The Vault, which was recently voted the best in Australia.

"It's part of society that will always be there, you may as well embrace it."

He said clientele from every demographic visited the store, including many from Toowoomba.

Mr Gallagher said the adult stores were an important part of society that helped satisfy a need.

He said many of his customers were dealing with health issues like prostate problems or after-childbirth problems.

"Some people have been sent here by their doctors, who say 'go and try that. It's part of life'."

Mr Gallagher, whose wife owns the store, said the couple was considering expanding into the lucrative online sex-toy business.

Femplay assured that they will be keeping their eye on sales as the new year rolls over to see just which neighbourhoods are starting the new year with a 'bang'.
