TOOWOOMBA mum Virginia Wilson doesn't want to be like some of the women in her family.

She doesn't want her life to be claimed by cancer.

Mrs Wilson took the dramatic step of having a preventative double mastectomy after breast cancer claimed her mum Coral and baby sister Felicity.

Breast cancer has also touched a number of aunts from both sides of her family, cousins and her great-grandmother.

"I think we have a predisposition for hereditary breast cancer," Mrs Wilson said.

Would you have a mastectomy if there was a history of breast cancer in your family?

This week, celebrity Angelina Jolie publicly revealed she too had a prophylactic (preventative) double mastectomy to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer.

Mrs Wilson praised the movie star for speaking publicly.

"When a celebrity starts talking about something people take note," she said.

Even though Mrs Wilson's sister Felicity tested negative for the BRCA1 and the BRCA 2 gene mutation, she was still convinced that the mastectomy was the right move.

"I like the peace of mind it gives me and my family," Mrs Wilson said.

"They don't want another (cancer) case in the family."

Mrs Wilson surgery, which included a reduction, was undertaken in Brisbane and cost about $3000.

Mrs Wilson has established a foundation in her sister's name which raises funds for different charities.

Earlier in the year, Felicity's Wish cocktail night raised $70,000.
