Abbott reviews his claims of taxpayer funds after scandal

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott says a widening expenses scandal at the heart of the Coalition caused him to review his own claims for taxpayer funds to attend a wedding several years ago.

His comments come after reports on the weekend that Coalition frontbenchers Barnaby Joyce and Julie Bishop claimed thousands of taxpayer funds to attend a wedding in India.

Mr Abbott, speaking to reporters in Bali, said those news reports caused him to review his claim for more than $1000 to attend former MP Sophie Mirabella's wedding seven years ago.

He confirmed he paid back the $1095 to the Department of Finance, saying he sought advice and was told the "matter was unclear".

Explaining his original claim, he said: "I was the Leader of the House of Representatives, and the Leader of the House has certain representative roles."
