Tony Abbott to Cabinet: You should feel reasonably happy

IN THE face of dwindling voter support, Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Monday told his Cabinet they should feel "reasonably happy" about their first nine months in office.

Despite protests in the streets over university fee deregulation, and public malaise about the Abbott government's first budget, Mr Abbott told the Cabinet "we are delivering".

"There have been lots of political ups and downs but nevertheless, those fundamentals...that we made a commitment to the public on, we are delivering," he said.

But the government's budget has continued to dog its electoral fortunes, with the latest Newspoll published on Tuesday showing further falls.

Published in The Australia, the poll showed the government lost 10 points off its election-winning lead in the nine months since the September poll.

Labor is now ahead in the two-party preferred stakes 55 to 45 over the Abbott government, but the biggest winners seemed to be independents and minor parties.

The Greens gained three per cent, up to 13% in the past fortnight, and about 15% of all voters said they preferred minor parties and independents over Labor and the Coalition.
