From tip-off to rip-off: The Chaser crew out to save us

CONSUMER affairs is the latest target to come into the sights of The Chaser crew.

Chaser alumni Craig Reucassel and Julian Morrow are teaming with Hungry Beast's Kirsten Drysdale and Kate Browne from consumer group CHOICE in the ABC's new series, The Checkout.

The series will mix serious consumer rights issues with humorous segments on things like funny products and "stupid" terms and conditions.

The Checkout - ABC1 - Thursday at 8pm

"Overall I guess we're arming people with information to be a bit more informed, to know how not to get ripped off and know what are your rights," Reucassel said.

"I've learned so much already from doing this show.

"On one extreme, we have all these rights that we don't enforce and we get ripped off when we shouldn't. On the other extreme there are areas where you think you're getting protected where you're just not at all."

Reucassel says the show will be "crowd sourced", referring to the viewer-submitted complaints and tip-offs that will feature in each episode.

Video complaints will feature on the show's new "FU Tube" YouTube channel.

"We won't be looking at the way one person is being shafted, but taking more of a broader look at how we're all getting shafted," he said.

"We want to know how people are frustrated by certain products."

The team will look at consumer-affairs minefields like natural medicine and mobile phone plans.

"There are new laws which are meant to protect you when you're buying a phone," Reucassel said.

"But it's like this compromised grab bag of rules intending to do the right thing but it doesn't really achieve it."
