Tintenbar must stop the flow of opposition goals

NEWLY-promoted Tintenbar face a stern test of character tonight when they travel to Crawford Park to take on Alstonville in Far North Coast premier league soccer.

Tintenbar's first season in the top flight is already in danger of unravelling after a record 13-0 flogging from Richmond Rovers last week, and they desperately need to restore some pride with a credible performance.

"We certainly didn't expect the big loss last week;it came as a surprise to us," coach Dwayne Smith said.

"The boys were used to dominating sides in first division last year but are now realising how much ofa step up it is to premiers.

"But we know we're a better side than that, and we'll work on our discipline and structure."

After conceding 19 goals in their first two games, the priority for the 'Bar has to be tightening up their defence.

In the absence of suspended captain Jake O'Grady, Smith will look to central defender Brett Watson, midfielder Shaun Brown and striker Steven Clifford to provide some on-field leadership.

But they face a huge task against a well-drilled Villa side that is just starting to find some rhythm.

Coach Mark Ambler will move midfielder Phil Francis into an attacking role with striker Liam Giles, hoping his ability to take on the defence will reap rewards.

Dropping Eamon Banks and Joel Perkins into central defence gives Villa a solid look at the back, and on home soil they will start as hot favourites.

"There will be no complacency from us, we'll continue to work on our play and tactics, and there'll be a focus on improving in the attacking third," Ambler said.

Kick-off is 8pm.
