Tigers roar back for victory over the Eels

RUGBY LEAGUE: Wests Tigers teenager Luke Brooks has already been compared to Newcastle legend Andrew Johns.

Yesterday the 19-year-old stepped up in the absence of injured Wests Tigers skipper Robbie Farah and played like the former Newcastle great, scoring a 90-metre runaway try before snapping a superb pressure field goal to edge the Tigers into the lead.

Veteran Pat Richards then nailed a huge penalty from halfway, clinching a stunning 21-18 Easter Monday victory over a gallant Parramatta at ANZ Stadium. The fifth win from seven games is the best start since the Tigers and Wests merged in 1996. But the game was again shrouded in controversy after the video referee disallowed a crucial try to Parramatta centre Will Hopoate, ruling Brooks had been obstructed by a decoy runner.

Blockbusting Eels winger Semi Radradra appeared to have snatched the two points when he strolled over in the 76th minute to level the scored at 18-all only for Sandow's conversion attempt to swing away late.

Brooks then nailed his field goal before Richards hoisted a 50-metre penalty between the posts in the final two minutes.

Meanwhile, the Penrith Panthers burst the bubble of the Gold Coast Titans with a rugged 14-12 win at Sportingbet Stadium last night.

Declining to roll out the red carpet for one of Penrith's favourite sons in Titans coach John Cartwright, the Panthers established a 12-6 halftime buffer to end the visitors' golden run, despite a late try to pivot Aidan Sezer.

Panthers 14 (Dean Whare, Matt Moylan tries; Jamie Soward 3 goals) def Titans 12 (Ryan James, Aidan Sezer tries; Sezer 2 goals).
